Week 2 Blog PLE

Wordle Digital Footprint
So I skipped week 2 last week and went straight to week 3, so for week 3 I will be posting the week 2 work about the PLE...

In the next 5-10 years I would like to be at a career job, settled in a nice house of my own. I do not want to be looking for a job, i want to be set. In order to be at that point in my life i will need to learn skills. Most important skill i think is patients because things don't happen quickly. I still need to finish school in order to move onto the next step in my life. My environment can help me with patients if i get a job in the field i want to be in. This will help because at least i will be making progress towards my future career.
Lustri, B (CC) 2016.

What i have learned from my current PLE is that my learning environment currently revolves around online interactions. All the tools used to learn are online except Microsoft documents, however these documents are usually downloaded from online sources. My cellphone contributes to my learning environment because i have access to it at all times and it is what most of my tools can be accessed on.

Weekly Report & Reflection # 3

SpaceX Rocket Failed Landing
Independent space travel leader SpaceX was in the news again today January 18, 2016 after a failed attempt to land a rocket on a barge in the middle of the ocean. Although the rocket, which was in orbit, landed vertically on the barge (as planned) a malfunction occurred in the one landing arm which did not allow it to fully extend, ultimately resulting in the rocket to crash from loss of balance. Although this mission was not successful it did show that this can be done in the future. The purpose of this article was to introduce cost saving measures to NASA showing that rockets that come back from space can be reused once they land instead of just being crashed in the ocean.

This article is important to learning because the rocket that was sent into space was sent for a very important geographical reason. The rocket was sent to space is measuring current sea levels. This is important in determining the current El Nino effect and can alternately measure the La Nina effect. The satellite the rocket carried is not only measuring sea levels but temperature changes in the ocean as well.

Todays RRS posts contributed to my knowledge in digital literacy because it was right there in front of me when I opened Feedly. Instead of normally going on Yahoo and searching through the numerous news stories they have, with the possibility of skipping it, the article was recently posted to Feedly where I could access it with the click of a button. This saved me time because I would have checked multiple sites first before going to yahoo news.

The tool utilized here was the tool of convenience. Feedly does all the hard work of searching for top stories and updates the list frequently while I just log in and scroll down a single page. This contributes to digital citizenship because I am now being exposed to more articles at my convenience. I can get through more articles on one site by scrolling down then I could by going through multiple sites and having to scroll through all them.

My Personal Learning Experience this week was set around Feedly and the convenience it offers. This tool will be helpful when researching a specific topic because I can categorise blogs based on many things. Once these are categorized, they will update and articles will be presented to me without me having to search for them. This is making digital learning a lot easier.

My Experience with RSS Feeds

My hours spent searching the world wide web daily have just been saved thanks to the RRS News feed system Fe
edly. Feedly lets you the user subscribe free to websites you frequent daily. These websites appear on your feed always updating their top stories. The great part about Feedly is that you can connect multiple websites to your RRS feed that way you can just use your mouse to scroll through the most recent stories from all your favourite websites without having to actually go from site to site!

An item of interest from my reader today is the article from the NY Times Movies feed. This article states that Ride Along 2 is the top box office movie, which is odd considering the recent Oscar drama. The Oscars have again drawn attention for not being diverse enough when it comes to the nominees. Ride Along 2 is a movie aimed at African-Americans and Hispanics. Ride along 2 has finally beat out star wars for the top box office of the week. Kevin Hart and the fact that the movie is a comedy can be a key contributing factor to this.

This article interested me because I recently read the article previously hyperlinked about the Oscars not giving attention to non-whites. This movie may be the start of change for the Oscars since it beat out movies (including the possible film of the year Star Wars) with a staring cast of Non-whites. Either way this article was brief but touched on issues of racism and acceptance in society today in the Hollywood perspective.

Brett L's Digital Footprint

Reflection:

A digital footprint is impossible to escape, however with the proper knowledge of what exactly it entails, a digital footprint is not always a bad thing. Many people unaware of what exactly a digital footprint is most likely don't want one, however for those who do know what it is and choose to clean it up, a digital footprint is something that can benefit them.

While watching the YouTube video Digital Dossier the viewer is visually shown statistics on negative social media postings that can discourage employers from hiring them. With this knowledge it is easy to clean up social media into something that can professional represent oneself. Once cleaned up, a professional social media footprint is an example of a positive digital imprint. A positive digital footprint is like Netiquette because it is professional and presentable. Netiquette  is the internet term for etiquette, which is properly presenting yourself in public; which in Netiquette is the World Wide Web.

I found a direct correlation between the knowledge needed to be a digital citizen and the digital footprint. A digital citizen is someone like myself; one who frequents the web daily. A digital citizen takes advantage of the vast information offered online. While taking advantage of this information it is easy to leave behind a digital footprint without even being aware. Every link clicked is another step in the digital footprint that digital citizens leave behind daily.
Digital learning has evolved into a whole new phenomena. As mentioned in this weeks Session 1 reading on Sakai universities now offer classes online from other universities which are all interconnected through the internet. Digital Citizenship allows these students to attend one university but study a course offered online at another university.

Report:

The DDL exam mad me become fully aware that I need improvement on my Digital Communication skills. As you can see Universities such as Western Ontario offer courses in Digital Communications for people like myself lacking in this digital development. Connections made in the readings of the Building Background and my explorations were similar. Digital footprints are left behind no matter how hard a user tries. Data is collected by companies from everyday amazon purchases to reserving your seat at the AVX cinema theatre. This information collected is pooled together and makes up my digital footprint. This session taught me that credit cards hold the most accurate digital footprint available. They collect not only how much you spent, but where you spent it and at exactly what time it was purchased. This could be gather in the digital context (online shopping) or simply at a mall not online. This made me realize that the internet is not responsible for starting a world of tracking humans through gathering cookies and data, because credit card companies have been doing it long before the internet even existed. Either way you look at it, you will always leave an imprint in your digital footprint every time you click that enter button to search a new site.
